Turkey

Cappadocia is a historical region in Central Anatolia, Turkey. It is best known for its unique ‘fairy chimneys’—tall, cone-shaped rock formations clustered in Monks Valley, Göreme and elsewhere. These surreal landscapes were formed by volcanic eruptions millions of years ago.

The region is also famous for its Bronze Age homes carved into valley walls by troglodytes (cave dwellers) and later used as refuges by early Christians. The rock-cut churches featuring Byzantine frescoes are a testament to the area’s rich religious history.

Today, Cappadocia is a world-renowned destination for hot air ballooning. At sunrise, hundreds of colorful balloons drift over the valleys, providing breathtaking views of the rippling rock formations and subterranean cities like Kaymakli and Derinkuyu.
